Five Things This Summer Reminded Us About Great Hospitality!
Summer in events is a bit of a pressure test.
Long days, busy bars, hundreds of guests, ambitious menus, unpredictable weather and plenty of moments where the plan changes in real time!
Our Serve crew have spent the summer working alongside caterers, venues, coordinators and event teams across the South West, from beautiful private celebrations to packed beach events.
And somewhere between the 2-metre sharing boards, endless trays of fizz and more late nights than we’d like to count, we’ve been reminded of a few things.
Because when hospitality is really good, it’s rarely down to just one thing.
1. The best people notice things
There’s a big difference between doing the job you’ve been given and seeing what needs doing next.
A table needs clearing. The bar is about to get hit with a queue. A guest is looking around for someone. The catering team could do with another pair of hands getting food out.
The best hospitality teams notice those moments before someone has to ask.
It’s something we really value in our Serve crew. You can teach someone how to carry a tray or set a table, but being switched on, reading the room and being willing to jump in is what takes service from good to great.
2. Nobody delivers a brilliant event alone
This summer has involved working alongside some seriously brilliant businesses!!
We’ve joined the Four Elements team at plenty of weddings, tackled some rather spectacular 2-metre sharing boards alongside Stallards, and spent multiple dates down on the beach supporting the team at Lusty Glaze.
Every business has its own job to do, but the best events happen when those lines become a little less rigid.
The caterer needs the service team. The service team needs the coordinator. The venue needs everyone communicating. And occasionally, everybody just needs someone to grab the other end of something very large and help.
Great hospitality is collaborative. It has to be.
3. Guests should never know about the chaos
Behind almost every event is at least one moment where something doesn’t quite go to plan.
A timeline moves. The weather changes. Someone is late. Something ends up somewhere it shouldn’t be. Fifty guests suddenly decide they’d all like a drink at exactly the same time.
That’s events.
The important bit is what happens next.
A good team adapts, sorts it and carries on, ideally without the guests ever knowing there was a problem in the first place.
Because from their side of the bar, it should all just feel... easy.
That effortless feeling is usually the result of a lot of people working very hard behind the scenes.
4. Familiar faces make a difference
One of our favourite things this summer has been going back.
Back to the same venues. Back alongside the same caterers. Back to support teams we’ve worked with before.
Because the second, third or tenth time you work together is different!!
You know how each other operates. Communication becomes easier. People know where they fit. There’s less explaining and more getting on with it.
That’s why we’re much more interested in building proper working relationships than simply filling a shift and disappearing again.
The better we know your business and your team, the better we can support them.
5. The people make it
You can have an incredible venue, beautiful food and a perfectly planned event… but ultimately, hospitality is about people looking after people!
It’s the person who remembers what someone was drinking. The crew member who spots that something needs doing. The caterer who jumps in to help. The coordinator who keeps everyone calm when the timings change.
And it’s the team who are still smiling at the end of a very long shift.
That’s what guests remember. And after a very busy summer, it’s probably the thing we’ve been reminded of most!
Here’s to the people behind the events!
We’ve worked with some fantastic businesses and brilliant individuals across the South West this summer, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has welcomed our Serve crew into their teams.
As summer starts to wind down, we’re already looking ahead to autumn events, Christmas and everything 2027 has in store.
If your calendar is starting to take shape and you could do with a reliable crew to work alongside your team, we’d be very happy to have a chat.
